MAGNESIUM

What is it?

Every time I open my email or pick up a magazine it seems I see an article about Mg. I’m calling it the supplement de jour. Mg is one of the essential minerals, without which problems can develop with muscles, bones, blood sugar, nerves, kidneys, and fatigue. It is the second most abundant mineral in the body.

Why do I need it:

Actual deficiency is rare in young healthy adults; however, in the elderly or people who do not have enough food, or those with digestive issues, use reflux medicines or those with alcoholism may be deficient.

What does it do?

There are many distinct types of Mg but for this blog we will talk about four of the most popular types and how they may help.

  • Glycinate – This type is a combination of an amino acid called Glycine and Mg. The addition Glycine is to add a calming effect which may make this one help with sleep and anxiety. I may also reduce symptoms of PMS. In addition, it may help improve exercise performance due to its ability to enhance glucose availability in the brain; and aid reducing or delaying the accumulation of lactate in the muscle tissue. < !–page break—>
  • Citrate – This product is used most prior to colonoscopy. mg citrate is also used for constipation. The mechanism is thought to be that it increases fluid in the small intestine. If overused it may cause loss of normal bowel function.
  • Oxide – Mg oxide most common use is for constipation by increasing transport time in the gut. Also, there is information that this type may help with migraine headaches and stress. If combined with B6 it may help with PMS. More studies are needed to prove these theories. Additionally, Mg Oxide may help to control blood sugar because it helps your body with insulin secretion by using it more effectively.
  • Sulfate – Epsom Salts. Another constipation treatment but mostly used for soaking sore muscles and joints. The minerals get absorbed by the skin to help relax and relieve pain. A lesser-known use if for preeclampsia to help lower blood pressure.

A word of caution: Any and all of these may cause diarrhea. When first starting I recommend that you be at home until you know how you are affected by the product.

How do I know if I need it?

If you want to be absolutely sure that you need mg you will need a blood test (serum mg); however, if you experience any of the following symptoms you might talk with your health care provider about trying a mg supplement.

  • Muscle spasms/cramps
  • Anxiety/depression
  • Low energy
  • Bone health – Osteopenia; excess mg is stored in bones helping them to stay strong
  • Hormone imbalance – mg plays a role in the balance of Testosterone, Estrogen, Progesterone and DHEA

Where do I get it?

Do not run out to the drug store and buy the first mg you see. Vitamins and Supplements are not regulated by the FDA. You never know if you are getting what you think you’re getting. For instance, Green Tea, there is a certain part of the leaf that is needed for Green Tea to be of any value. You pick up a bottle and it says Green Tea, but you have no way of knowing if it has the part of the leaf that gives you the benefit. I recommend Pharmaceutical Grade vitamins and supplements. My favorite company is Xymogen. I love Optimag 125. It is a Glycinate and has never caused me to have diarrhea (many of the drug store products have). Xymogen products are made here in the USA, I have toured the facility and met the founders. Their products are certified by USP and other certifying agencies around the world. You can be sure you are getting what you are paying for. I use them myself and for my family. These are not sold in stores; they must be purchased from a health care provider. I will put a link at the bottom of the page that will allow you to purchase online. If you have any questions, you may contact me at SupplementsScribblesmz@outlook.com.
