What is it?
Green tea comes from the camellia sinensis plant. Varieties include Sencha, a Japanese tea. When steamed some say it tastes grassy. Matcha, another Japanese tea known for its antioxidant properties. Dragon Well, this Chinese tea has a nutty flavor and Gyokuro, another Japanese tea that is grown in the shade. This is said to give it a sweet flavor. To make the tea, the leaves are steamed, pan fried and then dried. This process allows the leaves to keep their light green color.
What does it do?
• Antioxidant: Contains polyphenols which help to fight free radicals, protecting cells from damage.
• Wight Management: There have been studies that show green tea may kick up metabolic rate and fat oxidation thereby helping with weight loss.
• Heart Health: May help lower cholesterol levels.
• Brain Health: Green tea contains L-theanine and caffeine. These substances may help to reduce neurodegenerative diseases as they have a good effect on brain function.
• Cancer prevention: Some research shows that there may be promises for protection of some types of cancer but there is no evidence at this time to prove that. However, it may boost the immune system and get rid of toxins in the body.
• Blood Sugar: Green tea may improve insulin sensitivity which in turn may lower blood sugar levels.
Why do I need it?
No one needs green tea but if you live a stressful life green tea may be just the ticket to help you de-stress. It is said that it promotes “wellness from the inside out”. You can purchase it caffeinated or decaf, It also comes in supplement capsules. If you choose caffeine an 8 ounce cup will contain 20-45 mg of caffeine. If you don’t like drinking tea, you can still derive its benefits because it also comes in capsules.
Where do I get it
It is important to know that there is only a certain part of the tea leaf that makes the green tea do as promise. Unfortunately, most drug/grocery store brands might not have that particular part in them. As always, I recommend pharmaceutical grade vitamins and supplements so that you get what you pay for. My favorite brand is Xymogen. Their products are made here in the USA and are certified to have in them what they say they do. You can only purchase them from a health care provider. I will place a link at the bottom of this page for your convenience. Look for Green Tea 600.
How much do I need?
There are various studies about how much tea you need to drink for better health. One study revealed that 7 cups daily decreased the risk of death by 62% for people with heart disease. In another study, 4 or more cups per day lowers the risk of dying from Type 2 Diabetes. In general, 3 to 5 cups daily depending on the benefit you are looking for. It may take a few weeks or a few months to see improvement, again it depends on what benefit you are looking for.
